With his great concern to the OFWs, he ordered the total deployment ban on OFWs going to Kuwait after the discovery of the body of the household worker Joanna Daniela Demafelis inside a freezer in Kuwait.
Just recently, an OFW in a death row in the UAE, Jennifer Dalquez was freed. Dalquez was charged with the murder of her employer who allegedly attempted to rape her. Dalquez acted on self-defense and killed her male employer.
After nearly 4 years in the UAE prison, Dalquez was finally free and now enjoying the embraces of her beloved family back home. The OFW even recalled that while she was inside the prison, she never loses hope that she will be freed one day.
The president has definitely done something which led to the freedom of the OFW. Labor Secretary Silvestre Bello III confirmed that President Duterte threatened the UAE government that should they push through with the execution of OFW Dalquez, he will impose a total deployment ban of OFWs in the UAE just like what he did to Kuwait.
Bello relayed the message from President Duterte on their meeting with the UAE officials together with OWWA Administrator Hans Leo Cacdac, that the president honors the laws of the UAE but if they push through with the execution of Dalquez, he will be forced to declare a total deployment ban of OFWs in the UAE.
Two months later, the UAE government commuted the death sentence to just three years of imprisonment and eventually freed her. Dalquez flew back home on November 2 to her family.
The OFW was very grateful for what the President did that she can't help herself but to hug him and utter thanks.
