Getting a new phone number everytime is extremely easy in the Philippines as long as you can afford to buy a new SIM card. Having a mobile phone number in the country is not regulated unlike in many countries abroad. That is the reason why it is prone to be used by scammers and other bad elements. However, the old practice is set to end soon as the bicameral government body has already approved the proposed bill to make the mobile phone numbers permanent to each individual.

The proposed retention of the mobile phone number to a single subscriber regardless of whether the person has switched mobile service provider has now gained approval from both the Senate and the Congress.Senate Bill No. 1636, or the proposed bill called ‘The Lifetime Cellphone Number Act’ is authored by Senator Sherwin Gatchalian.
Under the bill, the telecommunication companies are mandated to give a mobile number portability to their subscribers regardless that they may switch to another network company, they can still keep their personal phone number with them.
Telcos who will fail to follow the regulation will pay a fine of P1million and the possibility of revocation of their operating franchises.
Senator Gatchalian believes that it is a way to free the subscribers for enduring the poor services of the telcos just for the reason that they do not want to change their mobile phone numbers.
Meanwhile, another related bill was approved by the Senate. It is the amendment to remove the connectivity charges among the telcos authored by Senator Panfilo Lacson.
